How to take anti-freeze measures for air energy heat pumps?

Jun 13, 2025

With the continuous improvement of living standards, winter heating methods have gradually diversified. In recent years, floor heating has become increasingly popular in the heating market, especially water heating. However, water heating requires a reliable and stable heat source to exert an efficient heating effect, and gas wall-mounted boilers are one of the main heating sources. With the improvement of environmental protection, energy saving, and safety conditions in the heating industry, gas wall-mounted boilers have gradually developed towards condensing technology. Environmentally friendly and energy-saving air energy heat pumps have emerged as a new force. Not only has it been strongly recommended in the "coal to electricity" project, but the dual use of central air conditioning and floor heating has also been vigorously promoted, becoming one of the popular heating equipment on the market.

The energy saving of air energy heat pumps has a lot to do with the ambient temperature. To adapt to different temperature environments and maintain a high energy-saving stability, air energy heat pump units have developed normal temperature air energy heat pumps. Low temperature air energy heat pumps and low temperature air energy heat pumps are suitable for the 0℃-10℃ environment in the south in winter and also for the 30℃ environment in the north in winter. However, in the face of low temperatures in winter, air-energy heat pumps still have to face the problems caused by defrosting and freezing of air-energy heat pumps, so how should air-energy heat pumps prevent freezing in winter?

1. Do not use it for a short period, do not cut off water and electricity
Whether it is a commercial hot water unit or a household heating unit, please do not turn off the power for a short period in winter or leave it unused for a short period. The air-energy heat pump unit has an anti-freeze protection function. Only when the heat pump unit operates normally and the circulating pump operates normally can the self-protection mechanism of the heat pump unit be guaranteed to start normally in cold weather, ensure that the circulating pipe does not freeze, and promote the normal operation of the heat pump unit.

2. If it is not used for a long time, please drain the system water
Under the premise that the ambient temperature is relatively low in winter, the water in the pipe is easy to freeze, causing the heat pump unit and the floor heating pipe to freeze. Therefore, air-energy heat pump equipment that has not been used or put into use for a long time in winter needs to have the water drained from the system to avoid air-energy heat pump equipment and water pumps. When it needs to be used, the pipe water is injected into the system.

3. Check whether the equipment is running and insulated normally
Air-energy heat pumps need regular maintenance, and a timely check whether the equipment is running and insulated normally. Specific items: Check whether the system water pressure is sufficient. It is recommended that the system barometer pressure be 0.5- 2MPa. If the pressure is too low, it may cause poor heating effect or unit flow failure; check whether there is water seepage in the pipes, gate valves and joints. If there is water seepage, it needs to be dealt with in time; check whether the insulation components, such as outdoor pipes, gate valves and pumps, are well insulated; check whether the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet water of the unit is too large. When the temperature difference is too large, check the system pressure or clean the filter in time; check whether there is debris (such as flying catkins), oil, smoke and dust on the fin evaporator of the unit. If there is debris, deal with it in time; check whether the drainage at the bottom of the unit is unobstructed. The above situation needs to be dealt with in time. Improper handling may result in poor heating effect of the unit, high power consumption, and serious damage to the equipment.

4. Maintain the working environment of the air-energy heat pump host
The air-energy heat pump must absorb heat from low-temperature air. The more heat absorbed from the air, the more energy-saving the air energy heat pump is. The amount of heat absorbed is related to the surrounding environment of the heat pump unit. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the gas around the heat pump unit is unobstructed. Regularly clean the weeds around the air energy heat pump and do not pile up debris around the heat pump unit. If the snow is too thick, the surrounding snow should be cleared in time to ensure smooth drainage at the bottom to avoid freezing of the drain pipe and blocking the drainage channel of the heat pump unit. For the heat pump unit affected by the surrounding environment, such as debris in the evaporator fins, it is necessary to regularly maintain the heat pump unit and clean the dirt on the heat pump unit. The heat pump unit, after maintenance, is not only energy-saving, but also reduces the failure rate.

As a new type of environmentally friendly and energy-saving heating equipment, the air energy heat pump immediately shines after entering the heating market and is favored by customers. There are pros and cons. Although the air energy heat pump brings many benefits, it will also be affected by the low temperature environment. Therefore, we must take anti-freeze measures to ensure the energy saving, stability and long life of the air energy heat pump.
